DONOR
SPOTLIGHT:
BUCKBEE/LINDQUIST FAMILY
Susan Lindquist
“We became donors to the
Women’s Foundation of
Boston in honor of Susan
Lindquist, our beloved mother
and an award-winning
molecular geneticist. When
she began her career in the
1970s, she encountered many
obstacles, criticisms, and
outright discrimination. ”
– Alana Buckbee
Susan Lindquist built a career of
incredible discovery and innovation at
Harvard, the University of Chicago, and
MIT, while mentoring and advocating
for women in the male-dominated field
of STEM.
A pioneering biologist and former director of the Whitehead
Institute, she was one of the nation’s most lauded scientists
and received the President’s National Medal of Science,
the nation’s highest scientific honor, in recognition of her
contributions.
When she passed away from ovarian cancer in 2016, our
family hoped to find a way to honor her legacy. We believe
every little girl should have the opportunity to pursue her
dreams, no matter how big or how bold. We were so excited
to learn how the Women’s Foundation of Boston supports the
goals of girls and women right here in our home state
of Massachusetts.
We look forward to many years of partnering with the
Women’s Foundation. Whether it’s empowering single moms
to earn their degrees or helping teenagers to build their
confidence through after-school programming, we feel
confident that our funding is spent thoughtfully to make a real
difference. Our mother’s optimism and tenacity will
continue to fuel and inspire the aspirations of women and
girls for many decades to come.
